FREE SKIN CHECKS TO COME TO KOROIT

A mobile skin cancer screening service is heading to Koroit, offering more than 100 free checks to the community.

The service is run by the Lions Clubs across Victoria and is a self-contained semi-trailer fitted with three consultation rooms.

Clubs across Victoria and New South Wales typically have to wait two years between visits.

Koroit Lions Club secretary Sue Frost said the town rebooked immediately after its last visit in 2024.

She’s been involved in the club for 9 years, and she says each year the trailer comes, it’s fully booked.

The checks are open to anyone and are recommended for those over 30.

The checks include a 20-minute scan by trained dermoscopists who carry out thorough head-to-toe examinations.

“I think people are aware of how important it is to check for skin cancer because it’s so prevalent”, she said.

Sue explains that she’s expecting it to be very popular because it’s free and everyone is feeling the pinch at the moment.

“I’m suspecting that a lot of people can’t afford a doctor’s appointments, I think people are more keen than ever to look after their health.”

There are 100-plus slots available with appointments running from 9 am to 3:30 pm each day. Around 20 of the slots are already filled within hours of being open.

“The motto of the Lions is we serve. A lot of people don’t like waiting in doctors’ surgeries. So, I suppose, this is a more relaxed atmosphere. We get a lot of good feedback with people saying they are glad they came”
