A fresh accident on the Hopkins Highway near Bushfield today has renewed community fears and intensified calls for urgent safety upgrades along one of the region’s busiest transport corridors.
The incident occurs less than a month after a serious crash at the intersection of Spring Flat Road and the Hopkins Highway, adding to a growing list of near-misses and collisions reported by local residents.
While the grass-roots Connecting Warrnambool campaign was originally founded to advocate for safer walking and cycling infrastructure, organizers say community feedback has rapidly shifted toward a broader anxiety over general road safety along the Hopkins Highway/Mortlake Road corridor.
More than 200 community members have already voiced their concerns through the Connecting Warrnambool survey. Respondents have overwhelmingly flagged critical issues, including:
- High traffic volumes and inappropriate speeds.
- Severe lack of pedestrian and cycling safety.
- A total absence of alternative transport connections into Warrnambool.
- Dangerous intersections and roadside hazards.
“Many families originally joined the conversation because they wanted safer pathways for children to access school, sport, and community activities,” Ms. McKinnon said. “However, what we are now hearing repeatedly is that residents are also deeply concerned about the safety of the road itself.”
With the region experiencing steady growth, the community is calling on all levels of government to collaborate on a long-term vision for the corridor before another major incident occurs.
“We need safe pathways for our children, but we also need a safer road for every person who uses it,” Ms. McKinnon said. “The community is simply asking for a plan that secures safety, connectivity, and accessibility for everyone.
