The Tower Hill State Game Reserve has been closed to duck hunting.
The Game Management Authority Victoria said the western lake at Tower Hill State Game Reserve has been closed to duck hunting since the start of the season.
The whole Reserve will now be closed, as recent surveys found significant numbers of Blue-Winged Shoveler across both the western and eastern lakes.
Wetlands will continue to be monitored for the remainder of the season.
If the reason for closure no longer exists, wetlands may be reopened to hunting.
Tower Hill resident and wildlife advocate Robyn Wylie, who led a protest at Tower Hill last month, welcomed the closure of their game reserve.Â
” Why did it take 17 days of terrorizing and possibly killing a near extinct species before the government did anything,” Ms Wylie said.
“This is a gross dereliction of duty and ensures cruelty stays baked in to this governments view of wildlife protectionÂ
“Meantime their stand over men at the Game Management Authority abuse their power and waste millions of taxpayer dollars each year hounding rescuers for trying to save lives”
