ELECTRIC VEHICLE SALES SURGE

Warrnambool car dealerships have reported a surge in electric vehicles sales, with the higher fuel price since the war in the Middle East began in March seen as a catalyst for this.

This follows the national trend when it comes to a new cars, with the goals posts quickly shifting.

May has proven to be a landmark month when it comes to the sales of Electric vehicles.

The month resulted in 46.4 per cent of cars sold in Australia being electrified vehicles.

This included battery electric vehicles (19.9 per cent), conventional hybrids (17.8) and plug-in hybrids (8.7).

Petrol vehicles accounted for 26.8 per cent of sales, with diesel coming in at 23.6.

In all, Australians purchased 100,206 new vehicles during May, a 4.8 decline when compared to May 2025.

Electric vehicle Chinese brand BYD had the second most sales for the month with 8211, eclipsing giants such as Hyundai (7007) and Ford (7195).

Toyota remains the biggest seller with 16,342 cars.
