REFINERY FIRE COULD IMPACT GEELONG JOURNEY

South west residents travelling to or through Geelong today are urged to be aware of a fire at the Corio Oil Refinery.

The fire is still classed as not yet under control as emergency services work to decrease its intensity.

It is expected the fire, which began late on Wednesday night, will continue into the early afternoon.

The fire comes at inopportune time, as war in the Middle East creates uncertainty around fuel supplies.

The Corio refinery produces half of Victoria’s and 10 per cent of the nation’s fuel.

It is one of only two facilities in Australia that can refine fuel.

The federal government said it was still assessing the impact the fire will have on fuel supplies.
