MIXED BAG ON WARRNAMBOOL’S ROADS

The drink driving message may be getting through to motorists in Warrnambool, but there are other areas with much work to do.

Victoria police carried out the five-day Operation Nexus across the Easter, targeting road behaviour.

In Warrnambool, no one was caught drink driving.

Two motorists were caught drug driving, while four were caught unlicensed driving.

The biggest issue on Warrnambool roads was speeding, with 37 offences recorded.

There were five unregistered vehicles, but no impoundments, one seatbelt offence, one mobile phone offence and three cyclist offences.

In Southern Grampians, which includes Hamilton, there were three impaired drivers – two drug and one drink affected, and 35 speeding offences.

State wide, police were disappointed with the outcomes from Operation Nexus.

Road Policing Acting Assistant Commissioner, Justin Goldsmith, said despite repeated warnings that we would be out in force, thousands of infringements were detected.

“The majority of these drivers acknowledge they’ve done the wrong thing, but have chosen to take a risk anyway – whether that’s speeding a few kilometres over the speed limit, or getting behind the wheel after a few drinks,” Goldsmith said.

“Ultimately, all traffic penalties are completely avoidable if motorists stick to the rules.”
