SHOOTING FOR THE STARS, WITH THE STARS

The South West has celebrated a massive sporting milestone as Warrnambool’s own Ally O’Connor officially made her Suncorp Super Netball debut on the weekend, stepping onto the national stage as Melbourne Vixen #68.

O’Connor, 26, was elevated to the senior squad for the Round 10 clash against the Sunshine Coast Lightning, replacing midcourter Hannah Mundy. Striding onto the court at wing defence (WD), the Vixens Academy captain put in a gritty defensive shift in what was a heavily disrupted under-manned Vixens outfit, missing key defensive pillars Emily Mannix and Rudi Ellis.

While the Lightning ultimately took advantage of the structural changes to claim a 66-56 victory, O’Connor’s debut stands out as a triumph of persistence, talent, and incredible local dedication.

FROM THE ROOSTERS TO THE BIG STAGE

For netball fans across Western Victoria, O’Connor’s rise to the elite tier comes as no surprise. Born and bred in Warrnambool, her elite pathway began right at home with her junior club, the South Warrnambool Roosters.

Playing in the Hampden Football Netball League (HFNL), O’Connor quickly established herself as a dominant midcourt force. Her spectacular local career was highlighted in 2021 when she claimed the prestigious HFNL Open Netball Best and Fairest award. Even as her netball journey took her to state-level programs, O’Connor remained deeply connected to the Roosters, giving back to the local pathway by taking on coaching roles within South Warrnambool’s junior ranks.

VNL LEADERSHIP

O’Connor’s pathway to the Super Netball league was forged through years of consistent excellence in Melbourne. Since 2018, she has been a vital cog for the Geelong Cougars in the Victorian Netball League (VNL) Championship division, earning back-to-back selections in the VNL Championship Team of the Year in 2023 and 2024.

Her ability to dictate play at both centre (C) and wing defence (WD) caught the eyes of selectors at the highest level, leading to her appointment as captain of the Melbourne Vixens Academy side in the Super Netball Reserves competition. In late 2025, that relentless work ethic paid off with an official call-up as the Vixens’ fifth training partner for the current 2026 season—setting the stage for her weekend debut.

BALANCING LIFE

What makes O’Connor’s journey even more remarkable is her life off the court. While managing the gruelling 3.5-hour commute between Warrnambool and Melbourne for elite training sessions, she has simultaneously been completing her graduate nursing year locally at South West Healthcare.

Speaking previously about the intense balancing act, O’Connor praised the flexibility of her local hospital unit in helping her manage elite sport and healthcare.

With a Suncorp Super Netball debut now officially checked off the list, the South West community will be watching eagerly to see where this hometown star’s inspiring trajectory takes her next.
