Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan has today announced that from July, women over 18 will be able to access the contraceptive pill from the chemist, without a script.
To offer the service, pharmacists will have to complete a postgraduate training module.
Women had previously been allowed to access pill repeats without an updated prescription from their doctor.
Prior to giving out the pill, pharmacists will have to undertake a thorough consultation, outline any risks and advise of other options.
Women will pay for the pill, but the pharmacist consultation will be free.
