HISTORY SCRAPBOOK – LEON CAMERON

It seems some people are destined for sporting fame from an early age.

This photo is proof, with the little blonde-haired lad on the left with the athletes trophy being Leon Cameron.

Cameron of course went on to have a successful AFL career with Richmond FC and the the Western Bulldogs, as well as coaching GWS Giants.

Cameron played locally for East Warrnambool Football Netball Club and South Warrnambool Football Netball Club before hitting the big time.

With him in the photo is his brother Graham, also a handy athlete and footballer in his own right.

The boys were competing in the Woolsthorpe Primary School sports day back in what looks like the very early 1980s.

Cameron played 256 AFL, kicking 108 goals.

He played 172 goals for the Bulldogs, between 1990 and 1999, winning the club best and fairest in 1993.

He then went on to play 84 games for the Tigers, between 2000 and 2003.

He coached the Giants for 193 games between 2014 and 2022.
