ALARMING DROWNING STATISTICS

The number of people drowning in Victoria is going in a dangerous upward trajectory.

Life Saving Victoria reported 52 people fatally drowned in Victorian waterways in 2024-25, a nine per cent increase on the decade average. A further 123 people survived a drowning close-call.

Ambulance Victoria are urging swimmers to read the signs around waterways to familiarise themselves with the dangers, stay within their swimming limits and never swim alone.

Ambulance Victoria has also stated its concern over the increase in the number of cases involving risky behaviour near cliffs and rocky coastal areas.

A number of people have been seriously injured after falling or jumping from cliffs.
