Illegal fishing methods caused death in the Portland Canal last weekend.
Six dead fish were found in an illegal fish net in the canal.
The fish included estuary perch, trevally, pike, southern sea carp and luderick.
Members of the public alerted fisheries officers to the scene.Â
“Regular patrols will continue to detect and deter similar illegal fishing activity in the area,” a Victorian Fisheries Authority spokesperson said. Â
“The unauthorised use of nets threatens fish populations and aquatic fauna and carries an on-the-spot fine of more than $1,000.”
The spokesperson said the public was encouraged to call the 13FISHÂ (133474) line if they suspected illegal fishing. Â
